Ebook About "Captivating." ––The Washington PostNamed a Best Book of Summer by Good Morning America • BuzzFeed • PopSugar • BookRiot • LifeSavvy • CT PostFrom "a master of historical fiction" (NPR), Karin Tanabe's A Woman of Intelligence is an exhilarating tale of post-war New York City, and one remarkable woman’s journey from the United Nations, to the cloistered drawing rooms of Manhattan society, to the secretive ranks of the FBI.A Fifth Avenue address, parties at the Plaza, two healthy sons, and the ideal husband: what looks like a perfect life for Katharina Edgeworth is anything but. It’s 1954, and the post-war American dream has become a nightmare.A born and bred New Yorker, Katharina is the daughter of immigrants, Ivy-League-educated, and speaks four languages. As a single girl in 1940s Manhattan, she is a translator at the newly formed United Nations, devoting her days to her work and the promise of world peace—and her nights to cocktails and the promise of a good time. Now the wife of a beloved pediatric surgeon and heir to a shipping fortune, Katharina is trapped in a gilded cage, desperate to escape the constraints of domesticity. So when she is approached by the FBI and asked to join their ranks as an informant, Katharina seizes the opportunity. A man from her past has become a high-level Soviet spy, but no one has been able to infiltrate his circle. Enter Katharina, the perfect woman for the job.Navigating the demands of the FBI and the secrets of the KGB, she becomes a courier, carrying stolen government documents from D.C. to Manhattan. But as those closest to her lose their covers, and their lives, Katharina’s secret soon threatens to ruin her. With the fast-paced twists of a classic spy thriller, and a nuanced depiction of female experience, A Woman of Intelligence shimmers with intrigue and desire.Book A Woman of Intelligence: A Novel Review :
I find it incredibly telling that the only mediocre reviews of this riveting novel are people essentially calling its heroine a whiner because she is rich and has a husband and children, yet is still unhappy. So sure, if your understanding of what “should” lead to female fulfillment is fundamentally a patriarchal and narrow one, you may miss the entire point of this book.Otherwise, brace yourself for a stylish, empowering update to Flaubert’s masterpiece meets a spy thriller. Hello, what’s not to love?! I love the worlds Karin Tanabe is always able to create and this is her best yet. The plot is so well crafted and page turning, I couldn’t put it down. But what I really loved was Katharina’s rich and conflicted inner life. Trapped in a gilded prison like so many women, her ambition a casualty of society’s expectations. And, like Flaubert, the point here is not to craft some elaborate morality tale and condemn or celebrate “good or bad” behavior, rather to depict this very real human condition, the very real plight of the mid-century woman—which still carries enormous resonance today, as if it even needs to be said. Karin Tanabe raises the big real questions of what we expect of women and how we support mothers, while telling a heck of a gorgeous story. Five stars! Karin Tanabe never disappoints. She is a master in historical fiction, and this book is no exception. The novel transports you to 1950s New York with masterful details and engaging and witty dialogue. My favorite thing about this book is that it is so difficult to find thrillers that are also literary -- most thrillers today have great plots but mediocre writing. This book immerses you not just in a world and setting, but in a captivating spy story. It is gorgeously written.
